March 2000

26th Sculling successes were the highlight of the day for wins at Abingdon Head, where the VB title was taken by Mike Edge, VD by Sean Morris and Nikki Ainslie taking the WS2 and WS3 events.
19th The Wallingford Veteran's competed in the Vesta Veteran's Head of the River today defending their Veteran C title. The crew came fifth overall but were beaten to the title by Thames Tradesmen's Rowing Club by four seconds. The top three crews were in the youngest age category of Veteran A.
18th The Head of the River Race was a success for the men's senior squad. Both crews coming in the top 90, the first crew achieving the clubs highest placing since 1996 coming in 40th with the 2nd Eight coming in 82nd.
4th Today's Women's Head of the River saw 24 rowers and 3 coxes compete from Wallingford. Wallingford two senior women's crews came 45th and 74th from a field of nearly 250. Wallingford's novices came a creditable 211th in their first ever race. However the day was marred somewhat for the novices by an incident after the finish line, in the process of steering to avoid another crew, a strong current caused their eight to become trapped against a moored boat, eventually causing it to capsize. Race marshals and the Metropolitan Police safety launch were and hand to pluck the rovers from the river, but the unfortunate Wallingford boat was beyond help, having being damaged beyond repair, being cracked around the full circumference of the hull. Wallingford RC would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff of the St Johns Ambulance and the members of Vesta Rowing Club for their help.
1st Wallingford Men's crews were preparing for the Head of the River Race later in the month by competing at the local Reading University Head. The race for over 100 Eights was won by Isis with Wallingford's Senior Men's Squad 1st and 2nd Eights coming 27th and 34th respectively. Also competing were the Veteran who are aiming to retain their Veteran C title at the Vesta Veteran's Head of the River. They won the Veteran coming 31st overall.
