6th September - Wallingford Juniors at Worcester Autumn
On 6th September, Wallingford Juniors raced in a coxed quad, five doubles and a single at Worcester Autumn Regatta. They were joined by “honorary junior”, Mike E, sculling in Senior 2 and Veteran C.
Boys
Our J15 quad of Patrick Bunting, Luke Titley, Tom Pryor and Dan Crossman, coxed by Chris Ellam had a straight final against Llandaff. The crews were level for most of the course until the bigger Llandaff boys pushed for the line to win by a canvas.
Tom and Dan got their revenge in the J15 doubles when they beat Llandaff in their semi-final by just over a length. In their final they defeated Reading RC by about 4 lengths to win handsome pint pewter pots.
Robert Hares and Charlie Jenkins racing in J16 doubles were a lot faster than Burton Leander and won their heat comfortably. In the semi against an established Worcester crew they did not settle and lost by a half length.
The J14 double of Chris Ellam and Ben Fussell wanted to make a point and stormed over the course to beat Stourport in their final by some 5 lengths, reversing the result of their previous meeting.
Girls
In the girls, Emma Rawlingson and Isobel Drury had just two outings before their WJ18 double event. Racing in a heat against an established Avon County double they had a super race and narrowly got beaten to the line by about a half length.
The WJ14 double of Hattie Drury and Sophie Delaney fared better. In their heat they slaughtered two tiny girls from Reading RC and in their semi-final had a harder race against two bigger Reading girls winning by about 2 lengths. The final against Stourport proved an easier task and our girls won by several lengths.
Isobel Drury in WJ16 single sculls beat a Bewdley RC sculler in her semi-final by about 3 lengths to reach a final against a Worcester RC sculler. The girls raced level for most of the course until Worcester slipped into a half length win.
“Honorary junior”
Our “honorary junior”, Mike E, had an exciting race in Senior 2 singles, dead-heating with Burton Leander after having been down most of the way. The re-row resulted in a one length win for Mike. In the final he won by about a length and a half.
In Vet C singles, Mike had a straight final against Stourport which he won fairly comfortably.
For the juniors, this meant 3 more wins in doubles and very honourable close defeats to established crews, some of whom
we later found had National Schools and National Championship medals to their credit. A decent result for our last Regatta – next,
the Head season!
