Nick English and Paul Mattick are the Wallingford members of that crew (no 15 start position). Nick is an ex-Cambridge Lightweight and has been in the GB Worlds teams since 2001 and was in the Lw4- in Athens. Paul is ex-Oxford lightweight and made his GB debut in Japan this year.

1 August 2005: Wallingford Youngsters are “Up for the Coupe”

The Coupe de la Jeunesse is a twelve Nation European Championship where the selected under 18-year-old athletes compete in rowing and sculling events.

It is held in different countries on a rotating basis and this year it was Great Britain’s turn to host the event at Dorney Lake at Eton, the venue for the 2012 Olympics.

The Great Britain team won in convincing manner with 236 points from Italy on 159 and France on 157. Great Britain won both the boys event and girl’s event by considerable margins.

After a long selection process, starting last October and involving tests, trials and assessments over the winter and spring of 2005. Crews were selected a month ago and trained together, culminating in an eight day training camp at Dorney Lake, immediately prior to racing on 30th and 31st July.

Wallingford Rowing Club Juniors were represented by Isobel Drury who won bronze medals in both the junior women’s eight and also the junior women’s four, and by Carl Delaney who won silver in the junior men’s double scull. Also in the Coupe team was Tony Wheel, Wallingford Rowing Club’s junior coach who coached the women’s eight and also the Great Britain women’s pair who won silver.

Isobel Delaney Carl Delaney The results are the end of serious rowing for the season, which has seen the Wallingford junior squad winning 27 trophies and has included representation at Junior Inter-regional Regatta and a medal at National School’s Regatta by Sophie Delaney in girl’s Under 15 sculls.

Coach Tony Wheel said, the results this season reflect on the effort put in by the top members of the squad, which is limited in size by equipment and coaching logistics. Notwithstanding this, Tony aims to have six of the Wallingford junior squad trialing for Great Britain team places when the selection process starts again in October.
