Wallingford Town Regatta, Sat 8th Sep 2007
More than 40 teams took part in the Wallingford town regatta --the new name for the former pub regatta.
Helen Sheppard, one of the organisers, said;
"There are fewer and fewer clubs now taking part, so we changed the name to make it more of an event for the whole town. Visitors entered into the spirit of the whole thing by coming along in a variety of different costumes."
Teams from Goring won two of the shields and the award for the team with the best spirit went to Aston Tirrold. South Stoke won the men's beginners award.

Friday: Rosie Williamson in the Great Britain Junior Women's 8. Bronze Medal
The National Rowing Championships of Great Britain, Friday 20th – Sunday 22nd July
Crews from Wallingford Rowing Club braved the wind and rain at a very muddy National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham over the three day British National Championships. Over 600 crews and scullers took part from locations as far apart as Aberdeen to Devon plus crews from British outpost clubs from Gibralter. Despite regular soakings, Wallingford's representatives fared well and came home with two silver medals and a bronze.
First to race their final was the Junior under 14 boys quad of Tom Ajose, Jamie Axon, Ed Hares and Jem Roberts coxed by Luke Taylor. Wind and rough water took a toll on the timetable and their event,with 17 entries,was run as a time-trial. Wallingford's youngsters had a solid row and were delighted to win the silver medal behind Windsor Boys School.
As the wind dropped and the waves reduced, racing returned to conventional six lane side by side racing. The womens coxless four of Angela Mills, Bea Longworth, Rosie Elmes and Jay Philcox had a straight final and got a podium placing with a bronze medal.
Finalists in the junior men(under 18) coxless quad sculls included a Wallingford composite crew of Matt Best (Marlow) and Simon Steele (Malgdalen Coll) joining up with Tom Pryor and Ben Fussell of Wallingford in a top class line-up. In a storming race,the Wallingford crew lay third for most of the race before squeezing past a Peterborough City/ Star club composite on the line to take silver. The Peterborough City/Star crew had been finalists at Henley Royal Regatta this year.
Wallingford's other representative in the finals were scullers Briony Cavell and Hannah Mason who reached their respective finals in large fields but narrowly missed medals.
Rosie Williamson has been selected for the Great Britain Junior Women's team to race in Italy at the Coupe de la jeunesse competition and raced with the juniors against adult elite competition as Nautilus,the national squad racing name. At the National Championships they competed in fours and an eight, reaching the finals of both events. Lets wish her luck for a medal in Varese, Italy, next month.

National Schools Regatta 25-27th May, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham
Wallingford Juniors show real strength at National Schools Regatta.
Over the weekend of 25th - 27th May the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham, was home of the National Schools Regatta 2007. Wallingford Rowing Club sent a small but strong contingent from the Junior Squad. Hard work over the winter was rewarded with the J14 Double Sculls on Friday reaching the semi final being drawn in the hardest of the 2 heats. Edward Hares and Jem Roberts put up a brave fight coming 4th.
The Saturday saw Ben Fussell and Josh Yerrell in the Championships Double Sculls with Chris Ellam and Tom Pryor in the Championship Single Sculls events. Chris and Tom put up a brave fight in a very strong field in the qualifying race, both just missing out on semi final places. Josh and Ben’s double qualified comfortably and were given a favourable draw in the semi finals. A 2nd place finish in the semi behind Henley gave the boys encouragement for the Final. A close race followed in the final with the Wallingford Double occupying the 4th place position for most of the race, however a blistering finish over the final 300m saw the Wallingford Double push through into the bronze medal position just behind Henley RC and Walton RC who took the Gold and Silver respectively.
We all awoke on the Sunday morning to see the weatherman had not been joking. It was a pretty horrible day. Rosie Williamson, Tom Pryor, Chris Ellam, Ben Fussell and Josh Yerrell all sat at the breakfast table contemplating what Holme Pierrepont was going to throw at them, and it wasn’t good. The lake began to resemble a surfer’s paradise as the day went on, but the Wallingford crews battled on regardless. The boys switched from the smaller boats to the Championship Quadruple Sculls and Rosie in the Championship Single Sculls. Both the Quad and Rosie qualified well for the Semi-finals before the weather really started to turn. Unfortunately the Quad couldn’t battle their way from a very poor lane draw and finished a disappointing 5th in their semi final. Rosie however battled through appalling conditions in both her Semi-final and her Final to finish an excellent 4th place ahead of some very strong girls.
A huge Thank you to all the support the juniors have had, including those who travelled up to Nottingham for the weekend. Also a massive thank you to Thomson Tui, the junior squad sponsor, for all the kit they supplied for the weekend. It made a very wet day that little bit dryer!
